Health Insurance

In the UK we are all lucky enough to be provided with a free medical service. Despite all the complaints and criticisms, the NHS serves everyone in the country to the best of its abilities. However, the NHS does have important short comings.

There are many treatments that are not available on the NHS. There are still other treatments that will only be available after many months of waiting on a waiting list. This is not something that a lot of people can afford to do if they are dying of a critical illness. Then there is the fact that you may have to wait for hours and hours in an emergency room waiting for treatment if you are involved in an accident.

This is where private health insurance steps in. Private health insurance will give you access to their own private hospitals that are available only to paying customers. This level of exclusivity means that you are guaranteed certain standards of service from the private sector. Private hospitals have a solid reputation for being less over crowded, better maintained and offering better service than their public counter parts. If you or a family member are ill, you will most likely be relieve to know that they are being looked after in one of the best hospitals in the country.

The private medical insurance company will have a list of hospitals scattered around the country that you will have access to. These hospitals are at your full disposal and no matter where you are located in the country, there will most likely be a hospital within easy reach of your home.

All of the treatments that you require will be covered by your health and medical insurance policy. This can range from heart surgery, to a foot massage or physiotherapy. Many health insurance policies will also cover you for mental illness and psychiatry services should you need them.

The way in which your premium will be calculated depends to a large extent on your age. The younger you are the lower the risk that you will require medical treatment and so the policy will be priced accordingly. If you are taking out a family health care policy, then the cost of the policy will be calculated based on the oldest member of the family.

Then you will pick the level of coverage you require, and what sort of extras, if any you would like to add to your policy. These extras may give you extra features such as dental treatment or alternatively they may make you eligible for refunds if you take treatment from an NHS facility when you were entitled to use a private one. They will depend on the terms of the policy itself and the company offering it and you should take care to read the terms of the policy before you agree to it.

Once you have chosen the features that you require, and the level of coverage you need, and once you have decided on a single, couple or family policy, the health insurance company will be able to do the rest and give you a quote on your health insurance premium.
